more nina-isms

She calls playdough "potato".
She wants me to put my arm around her tummy when she's falling asleep - so she says, "Can you help me, Mom? Can you put the belt on?"
Today we saw the most horrifying gigantic grasshopper, probably 2.5 inches long and black with spikes on its legs, on our window while we were eating. We were joking about who it was looking at. Nate: "I think it's looking at you, Kai."
Kai: "No, I think it's looking at you, Dad."
Nate: "Maybe he's looking at my beard." (Nate's sexy 5:00 shadow)
Nina: Pointing at Nate's chest, "Maybe he's lookin' at your fur!"

learning to draw

Kai loves these "learning to draw" dvd's. Here they're learning to draw houses. They're way beyond his abilities, but he enjoys them nonetheless. Nina's doing here best to keep up. And here is Nate drawing as well - Kai has been begging for a star wars color by number for days (remember in Sac when for weeks I spent my late nights getting those ready for Kai the next morning? and he would be so excited...but now he want star wars and I'm not up to the task) Nate spent about an hour drawing a perfect yoda.

jam session

Nate is thrilled to have a new guitar. Kai is thrilled to be able to play his old one. Here they're making up their own riff.

my girl likes to dress up

Wearing Sara's clothes. She's a flamingo in the other two, asked me to make her a nest out of the couch cushions.

a really nice afternoon

Sara, Tibo, Katy and Hector visited the northshore last night. We took them to Franco's for a few hours, Tibo is a little fish and loved flopping around in the baby pool. Nate took the boys down the waterslide countless times. Came home with some really tired kids. We had a wonderful dinner of grilled shrimp and drum, and peach mojitos with fresh Alabama peaches from the farmer's market. Thanks, Nate! Can't wait to share those cocktails with Fud and Meecie next week.
Feeling very lucky and very happy that my sister's my neighbor again.

Awwww...

kai reads the sunday paper

Kai taught himself to read before he turned 3. Nina is a smart gal in a different way which doesn't include an interest in letters. I'm actually going to have to try to teacher her to read?!

Kai's first day of camp

Kai practicing his Kung Fu moves just before heading to his first week of summer camp.
We had a nice little routine for the first two weeks of summer: swim lessons at 10 followed by a few hours playing in the pool. Nina would nap while Kai and I played games. But then we'd suffer a bit in the afternoon - too hot to do ANYTHING outside, tough to manage two kids who want my undivided attention playing in the house, nothing to do except go shopping - yuck! - here on the northshore when it's too hot to be outside, and not enough energy to get the kids rounded up in their suits again. So Kai got a bit bored. He started to get bored with food. His carseat. Our games.
I'm sure we would have figured out a new routine, but he was thrilled to start summer camp and hasn't looked back since. This is week one of three. Nina asks, "When I get bigger, can I go to camp?" And that's enough for now; she's perfectly content to be home with me painting, cuddling, playing doctor, playing doctor, playing doctor, playing doctor...
Kai's reports are short, but his smiles say it all. I know he swims a lot there, goes down the water slide, went to the Saints training camp on tuesday, made new friends. And Nina and I have our own routine, naps for this tired mama have replaced games with Kai. Some nights we return to swim, last night it was nice enough for Nate to take the kids outside to play with our little neighbor, Caleb, for awhile.
And today Nina I head to nola to see Sara, Matt and Tibo, who have been in Europe for two weeks. Felt like a lot longer. I'll get my bagel and cream cheese fix there too. And maybe a chocolate croissant too.

proud fisherkid

Kai spent the afternoon with the Ancar's on saturday. They live in a really cool house on the bayou, the water runs along their backyard. Kai caught 5 fish and now can't wait to get his own fishing pole.

water balloon photoshoot

tired little girl

Our little Ninsies rocked the waterslide at Franco's yesterday. She's a little fish, just like her brother, now only wants to go down the slide! And she wants to go by herself. She cruises through the water, she can swim a few yards on her own.
She skipped her nap yesterday, but she was so exhausted that she fell asleep on the couch while we were whirlygigging around the house getting ready for company. This has never happened! I think Kai did this once around the same age too.

A fun night

The "quads" came over last night with their parents, minus one who was home with a stomach bug. Connor (blue shirt), Andrew (red shirt), Hayley and Lauren are some of the sweetest kids we know, and their parents as well. The kids went crazy on the slip-and-slide and dug through toys in the backroom that haven't seen the light for months. Andrew chased lizards and waited patiently for the moonlight gecko/frog display on our windows. We ate our favorite tomato corn pie and nectarine buckle for dessert; our first dinner guests other than family in LA! We need to do it more often. Good excuse to clean the house. The kids fascinate me. Andrew was firstborn and seems to be the ringleader. Future biologist, he loves to be outside in his grandma's garden and finding animals and bugs. Nina calls him "the boy with the smile." Connor is more quiet, but fiesty, and a future engineer like his dad - he can put together star wars lego sets all by himself. Hayley, "the purple gul," who didn't join us, is their drama queen, a beautiful little brunette with blue eyes, she's a talker and is super sweet with Nina. And Lauren, the "pink gul" and the littlest (she weighs the same as Nina), free with her hugs and loves to dance and twirl around. I cannot imagine having four 5-year-olds. For awhile I thought they were "easy kids" but I've been around them long enough to know now that they're no "easier" than mine. Their parents are soft-spoken and gentle and dedicated. Elizabeth's mom, Betsy, is a hoot, we love spending time with her too. So...friends. Nice to have some. Weird to think we could know them here for a long time, we're not going anywhere.

Nate performs and Kai laughs

I love this laugh.
