weekday mornings at 609 w 23rd

What's going on at 6:15 AM while Kai is swimming and Julian and I are out watching him.

He's at that perfect age. All buttery cuteness and drool and pride. Not sure which kid got the camera this time.

I invited the boys to play this afternoon, and instead I got the gift of the boys PLUS Val and Gerald and a big pot of Gerald's okra-n-chikn gumbo. Sara and T were here, the kids were absolutely insane and we had to sit them in front of tom and jerry for hours. The visit was a wonder for my soul. Thank you, friends.

Picked up some toys for the kids at Target today while they were with the babysitter. I gave Nina hers and after she jumped for joy a bit she said, "Why did you give this to me, Mom?" And I said, "Well, daddy really misses you and he wanted me to buy a present for you." Nina said, "Oh, that makes me have tears!"

Note the sass at the end. "Nu-uh!" I think kids are born with a sassy gene. They couldn't possibly learn sass from their parents!

Nina: "But she's a special girl! She gave me pretzels-n-stuff!"

Meecie hasn't been around as much for Julian as she was for Kai and Nina during their baby stages. :( But Meecie should be happy to know that Nina is as enthusiastic and interested in Julian's bowel movements as Meecie was, so I have somebody to share that excitement with. Me: "Wow, good job Julian. Big poopy!" Nina, running: "Can I see it?! Can I see it?!" Me: "Sorry, Nina, I already wrapped it all up." Nina, crying: "Awwwwwwwwwwwwww!"

Nina and I made a toy for Julian today. A ziploc bag filled with glitter, water, little toys: a sensory thing. Of course he just wanted to eat it.

Nina: "Kai, do you miss your old tooth?"
Kai: "No, I love it when they come out. So I can spit through, like this!"

Steph: "Daddy's gonna be gone for the next four nights. Doesn't that stink?!"
Nina: "Yeah, stinky daddy!" with a smack on the arm. Kai cracked up.

(If you're wondering why I'm heavy on ninaisms these days and light on kai-isms, it's because the predominant words we hear these days are butt, buttcrack, fart, and variations on that theme. Looking forward to the end of this phase.)

...in which I keep clothes that are too small but cannot part with. So she got herself dressed like this on the day we were going to the dr's office and I couldn't talk her out of it.
